ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosed method and system reduces the ampli- tude of an audio signal as a function of the spectral energy distribution of the audio signal. The amount of reduction of the entire signal is determined by the ratio of a first signal derived as a function of the logarithm of the signal energy within a first frequency band to a second signal derived as a function of the logarithm of the signal energy within a second fre- quency band. Undesirable signals (such as those repre- sentative of fricatives) which require greater reduction have a substantial portion of its signal energy within the first band. DBX-53
