A B S T R A C T An apparatus and method for de-ionizing solutions, for example, desalination of sea water. The method consists of accelerating the solution through a passage which has alternating narrow and wide portions and one side of which is at a relatively higher electrical potential than the other side, the ions migrating to opposite sides of the passage being allowed to leave the passage to flow in subsidiary channels. The apparatus consists of a passage having alternating narrow and wide portions, means for accelerating the solution through the passage, means for producing a potential difference across the passage, and subsidiary channels to opposite sides of the passage for receiving flows of ions migrating from the passage. This invention results in a method and apparatus have a lower capital and operating cost than known methods for desalinating water.
