ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process for preparing a 7-acylamido-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid ester by healing a 6-acylamidopenicillanic acid sulfoxide ester in an inert solvent and in the presence of an acidic catalyst characterized in that the improvement comprises heating the penicillin sulfoxide ester in 1,1,2-trichloroethane and in the presence of a salt of dichloromethanephosphonic acid and pyridine, quinoline, isoquinoline or the methyl substituted derivatives thereof.
