A deactivatable marker for product security identification or authentication comprises a protective coating intermediate a deactivatable magnetic substrate, typically of a soft magnetic material, and a deactivating layer, typically of semi-hard magnetic material. The protective coating prevents deterioration of the physical and magnetic characteristics of the magnetic substrate when the deactivating layer is applied.
