TITLE DEACTIVATION OF TANNINS IN SEEDS INVENTORS Robert D. Reichert Donald J. Schwab ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Some seeds or varieties thereof, particularly grains like sorghum and barley, or legumes like beans and peas, contain tannins in undesirably toxic amounts even for use as animal feed. It has been found that such seeds can be detoxified by steps comprising (a) imbibition of water or acidic solutions into the seeds, and (b) storage thereof under non-evaporating conditions which preclude microorganism growth, until the tannin content is deactivated and reduced to nutritionally-desirable levels by chemical modification. As an alternative in step (a), the seeds can be early - harvested at elevated moisture content.
