Enhanced efficiency of production of aromatic compounds via the common pathway, as shown in the figure, of a host cell is realized by increasing the expression of enzyme special acting on substrate intermediates in identified rate-limiting reaction steps in the pathway. Host cells are transformed with recombinant DNA encoding for the rate-limiting enzymes to provide cell transformants characterized by capacity to produce high concentrations of aromatic metabolites when grown in call culture with a metabolizable carbon source.
