0F'891 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A decision feedback equalizer has an adaptive filter that receives at least one sample value and at least one previous offset symbol value, multiplies these values by coefficients and adds the products to obtain a filtered value, then updates the coefficients. The filtered value and a fixed offset value are supplied to a detector that subtracts the offset from the filtered value, thresholds the result to generate a symbol value, then adds the offset value to the symbol value to generate an offset symbol value. A subtractor then generates an error value equal to the difference between the filtered value and the offset symbol value. The error value and the offset symbol value are supplied to the adaptive filter for use in updating the coefficients.
