ABSTRACT In the receiver of a multilevel signal transmission system an unreliability signal is generated for a decided channel symbol whenever the value of a sample originating the symbol lies within value regions flanking each decision threshold. Unreliability signals relevant to each code symbol are counted and the existence of an erasure is signalled to the decoder when the number of unreliable channel symbols exceeds a predetermined number. The number of erasures in a codeword is also counted and erasure correction is disabled in the decoder when their number exceeds a predetermined value.
