An article including a panel-like structure (10, 100) mountable in an automobile vehicle to form a part of the interior thereof, and a process for making the same are disclosed. According to this process, an outer layer (26, 126) defining at least a portion of the exposed exterior surface of the structure is prepared by applying a water-dispersed composition (36) containing a thermoplastic polyurethane and a heat-activated cross-linking agent onto a mold surface (34) and thereafter drying the composition (42). Next, a composition comprising (i) a poly(vinyl chloride) resin and at least one plasticizer and/or (ii) a thermoplastic polyurethane resin material is gelled onto an inner surface (266) of the outer layer while on the outer layer is retained on the mold surface. The gelled composition is then fused to form an inner layer (28) interfacially chemically bonded to the outer layer. The inner layer with the outer layer chemically bonded thereto is united with the rigid substrate (22, 122) so that the rigid substrate serves to reinforce the outer layer. The exposed exterior surface of the panel-like structure simulates the appearance and feel of authentic leather, while the inner layer and an optional semi-rigid polyurethane cellular foam intermediate layer (30, 130) provide a compressing feel to the exposed portion.
L'invention a pour objet un article comprenant une structure (10, 100) de type panneau, pouvant être fixé dans une automobile pour former une partie de l'intérieur de cette dernière, et un procédé de fabrication de cet article. Selon ce procédé, une couche extérieure (26, 126) définissant au moins une partie de la surface extérieure exposée de la structure est préparée en appliquant une composition (36) dispersée à l'eau à base d'un polyuréthanne thermoplastique et d'un agent de réticulation activé par la chaleur sur une surface (34) de moule, puis en faisant sécher cette composition. Ensuite, une composition (42) comprenant (i) une résine de poly(chlorure de vinyl) et au moins un agent plastifiant et/ou (ii) un matériau de résine de polyuréthanne thermoplastique est gélifiée sur une surface intérieure de la couche extérieure, tandis que cette dernière est maintenue sur la surface (266) du moule. La composition gélifiée est ensuite fondue pour former une couche intérieure (28), liée de manière chimique à la couche extérieure. La couche intérieure, à laquelle la couche extérieure est chimiquement liée, est unie au substrat (22, 122) rigide de telle sorte que ce dernier permet de renforcer la couche extérieure. La surface extérieure exposée de la structure de type panneau simule l'aspect et le toucher du cuir authentique, tandis que la couche intérieure et, éventuellement, une couche intermédiaire (30, 130) de mousse cellulaire de polyuréthanne semi-rigide donne un aspect de compression à la partie exposée.
