An article including a panel-like structure mountable in an automobile vehicle to form a part of the interior thereof and conceal a secondary restraint system, and a process for making the same are disclosed. According to this process, an outer layer is established on a first mold surface, with the exterior surface of the outer layer having an opaque visual appearance and a configuration complementary to the first mold surface. A casting composition is then rotationally casted onto an inner surface of the outer layer to create an inner layer of a predetermined thickness while restricting the gel thickness along an elongated structurally weakened tear seam. The casting composition is then fused. The outer layer and inner layer collectively define a layered composite structure, with the outer layer presenting the same opaque visual appearance to the exterior surface thereof unaffected by change in the inner layer thickness so that the structurally weakened tear seam is hidden from view. The composite structure is united with areinforcing substrate including at least one door so that the structurally weakened tear seam is in cooperative association with the door so as to fracture when the door is actuated.
L'invention concerne une structure de type panneau pouvant être fixée dans un véhicule automobile, de façon à former une partie de son habitacle et à cacher un système de retenue secondaire, ainsi qu'un procédé permettant de fabriquer ladite structure. Selon le procédé, on applique une couche externe sur une première surface moulée, la surface externe de la couche externe ayant un aspect opaque et une configuration complémentaire de ladite première surface moulée; on coule par rotation une composition de coulage sur la surface interne de la couche externe, de façon à créer une couche interne d'une épaisseur prédéterminée, tout en limitant l'épaisseur du gel le long d'une ligne de rupture structurellement affaiblie; et on fait fondre la composition de coulage. La couche externe et la couche interne définissent ensemble une structure composite multicouche. La couche externe présente le même aspect opaque que la surface externe non affectée par la modification d'épaisseur de la couche interne, de façon que la ligne de rupture structurellement affaiblie ne soit pas visible. La structure composite est unifiée par un substrat de renfort comportant au moins un volet, qui coopère avec la ligne de rupture de façon que celle-ci se rompe quand il est actionné.
