ABSTRACT Coatings are provided that are especially useful for decorative purposes. In one embodi- ment, black coatings are provided that include a black layer of disordered carbon. The carbon lay- er may be formed by sputtering from a carbon tar- get. The coatings can be characterized as having a high gloss, a high degree of blackness and being non-transparent with good adhesion and physical integrity.
