A device is described which is useful for providing a dedicated access channel to the root canal of a tooth. The device (20) has a hollow interior (21) adapted to receive and loosely accommodate the shank (32) of an endodontic file. In practice, the orifice of a root canal is exposed by drilling an access cavity. The device (20) is slid over an endodontic file until the wider end (22) of the device (20) is adjacent to the file handle (31). The file tip (33) is then inserted into the root canal, and the device (20) is brought to bear against the floor of the access cavity with the narrow end (20) against the exposed orifice of the root canal. A polymerizable matrix material is injected around device (20) until the entire access cavity is filled to the biting surface. After the matrix solidifies, the file and device (20), which has a releasing outer surface (24), are removed leaving a conical access channel to the canal orifice.
