An electronic document delivery system and method in which a broadcast center periodically sends a "catalog" of available documents to a receiving computer, thereby allowing a user to browse through the available documents without having to access the broadcast center. The documents are transmitted as packets, and the packets are decrypted as soon as they are received, eliminating the need to store both an encrypted and an decrypted version of the documents at the receiving computer. The receiving computer periodically receives information allowing it to decrypt received documents and to encrypt billing information for the receiving computer. The invention is not limited to text-only documents and can receive all types of documents, such as software, images, text, and full-motion video.

Système et procédé de distribution de documents électroniques dans lesquels un centre (150) de diffusion envoie périodiquement un "catalogue" des documents disponibles à un ordinateur récepteur (110) afin de permettre à un utilisateur de parcourir les documents disponibles sans solliciter le centre (150) de diffusion. Les documents sont transmis sous forme de paquets qui sont décodés dès leur réception ceci évitant de devoir stocker, au niveau de l'ordinateur récepteur, une version codée et une version décodée des documents. L'ordinateur récepteur (110) reçoit périodiquement des informations qui lui permettent de décoder les documents reçus et de coder des informations de facturation qui lui sont propres. Cette invention ne se limite pas aux documents du type texte uniquement, elle permet également de recevoir des documents de tous types tels que des logiciels, des images, du texte et de la vidéo en temps réel.
