A cardioversion/defibrillation electrode comprising an insulative element which supports one or more planar conductive elements. The conductive elements are spaced apart from each other by a "conductor-free" region, which serves as a spring loaded hinge about which the electrode may preferentially bend. The electrode is thereby spring loaded to adopt a substantially planar orientation in a relaxed state but is capable of bending to a non planar orientation wherein the electrode is folded about the hinge to facilitate intrathoracic introduction. After introduction, the spring loaded hinge causes the electrode to adopt its relaxed substantially planar orientation for attachment on or near the heart surface. Due to the preferential bending in the "conductor-free" region, the electrode conductive elements are not permanently or substantially deform during implantation.
L'invention est une électrode de cardioversion/défibrillation qui comporte un élément isolant supportant un ou plusieurs éléments conducteurs plans. Ces éléments conducteurs sont séparés les uns des autres par une région « sans conducteur » qui sert de charnière élastique par rapport à laquelle on peut produire un pli privilégié dans l'électrode. L'électrode est donc essentiellement plane à l'état libre, mais peut prendre une forme non plane quand on la plie par rapport à la charnière pour en faciliter l'introduction dans la cage thoracique. Après cette introduction, l'élasticité de la charnière redonne à l'électrode sa forme essentiellement plane pour que l'on puisse la fixer à la surface du coeur ou au voisinage de ce dernier. En raison du pli privilégié dans la région « sans conducteur », les éléments conducteurs de l'électrode ne sont pas déformés de façon permanente ni de façon substantielle durant son implantation.
