A control system and method for controlling deflation operations in a CTIS. The system accurately calculates the time required to allow a venting tire to deflate to the selected inflation pressure and, preferably, if multiple groups of tires are being deflated, to deflate until they are slightly lower than desired pressure as sensed and to then increase the pressure up to the desired level of pressurization. The deflation overshoot balances the tire pressures in a short inflation action because deflation is inherently a flow control operation not necessarily resulting in all tire being deflated to equal pressure. In determining the necessity and magnitude of required inflation or deflation operation, the existing inflation pressure is measured and then compared to a selected desired pressure. As fluid pressure of the controlled tire, tires or groups of tires in the present invention is measured by a single pressure transducer located remote from the tire or tires, the system is in a steady state condition during each measurement to accurately measure the pressure. The minimizing of the frequency or occurances of pressure measurement operations, which interrupts the process of inflation or deflation to a desired pressure will minimize the total elapse time required for a complete inflation or deflation to desired pressure operation.
