An improved, steerable electrophysiology catheter (110) featuring an elongated wound wire coil (72) extending through the catheter body. The coil is constructed to enable the catheter body to withstand reactive compressive load without distorsion during application of tension on a pull wire (54) extending through the catheter body and to transmit torque from the proximal end of the catheter body to the distal tip thereof to enhance fidelity of rotational positioning of the distal tip in response to rotational orientation of the proximal end of the catheter. The coil is in frictional torque-transmitting relationship with the interior of the catheter body substantially along the common length of the catheter body when it is bent. The catheter may be equipped with augmented throw for one-handed operation.

Cathéter orientable amélioré (110) pour électrophysiologie, présentant une bobine (72) de fil enroulée traversant le corps du cathéter. La bobine est adaptée pour permettre au corps du cathéter de résister aux charges réactives de compression sans se déformer lorsqu'on applique une tension à un fil de traction (54) traversant le corps du cathéter, et pour transmettre la force de torsion de l'extrémité proximale du corps du cathéter à son embout distal, afin de favoriser un positionnement en rotation précis de l'embout distal en réponse à l'orientation en rotation de l'extrémité proximale du cathéter. La bobine se frotte contre l'intérieur du corps du cathéter sensiblement sur toute sa longueur commune à l'état fléchi, de manière à lui transmettre la force de torsion. Le cathéter est éventuellement équipé d'une partie saillante prolongée facilitant sa manipulation d'une seule main.
