A deflectable tip introducer or guide catheter optimized for placement of leads or catheters within the vasculature of the human body is disclosed. The introducer includes inner and outer concentrically located tubular sheaths. The inner and outer sheaths are preferably provided with different curved configurations, allowing the over-all displayed curvature of the introducer over its distal portion to be adjusted by longitudinal movement of the inner and outer sheaths relative to one another. The outer sheath may be fabricated of a thin tube of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) or other material having a relatively large stiffness as compared to the inner sheath. The outer sheath is sized to fit closely around the inner sheath. The inner sheath may be formed of a reinforced polyurethane, and preferably has a thin wall that is of about .005 inches in thickness or less. When supported by the inner sheath, the outer sheath transfers torque along the composite introducer assembly and serves to modify the curved configuration displayed by the distal end of the introducer assembly in conjunction with the relative longitudinal movement of the inner and outer sheaths.
La présente invention concerne cathéter à extrémité d'introducteur ou de guide béquillable, optimisé pour la mise en place d'électrodes ou de cathéters dans le système vasculaire du corps humain. L'introducteur comporte une gaine tubulaire intérieure montée concentriquement dans une gaine tubulaire extérieure. Ces gaines présentent de préférence des configurations d'incurvation différentes, ce qui permet une reprise de l'incurvation apparente d'ensemble dans la partie distale par un déplacement longitudinal de l'une des gaines par rapport à l'autre. La gaine extérieure peut être faite d'un tube fin en polyétheréthercétone (PEEK) ou un autre matériau d'une rigidité relativement importante par rapport à la gaine intérieure. La gaine extérieure est dimensionnée de façon à s'adapter exactement autour de la gaine intérieure. Cette gaine intérieure, qui peut être faite de polyurétane armé, présente une finesse de paroi de 0,005 pouces, voire moins. Lorsqu'elle s'appuie sur la gaine intérieure, la gaine extérieure, qui transfère un couple le long de l'ensemble introducteur composite, sert à modifier la configuration d'incurvation apparente de l'extrémité distale de l'ensemble introducteur en conjonction avec le déplacement longitudinal relatif des deux gaines l'une par rapport à l'autre.
