ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lateral alignment device for use in a fiber optic connector. A pair of mating connector shells with associated socket members provide for the disconnectable, mutually collinear abutment of at least one pair of fiber optic cables to be signal connected. The alignment device com- prises a hollow elongated elastomeric sleeve constrained laterally with- in a cavity in the socket member. The alignment sleeve extends on both sides of the point of abutment of the two connected fiber optic cables. The bore in the sleeve has a central portion of a diameter less than that of said cables, and outwardly tapering end portions. When the connector shells are mated, initially the cables are pushed into the smaller diameter central portion of the bore where they become self-aligned. Thereafter, internal shoulders within the socket members apply an axial compression force to the elastomer sleeve providing a seal and vibration dampening for the cables.
