The present invention relates to a defragmentation method and arrangement for increasement of the average block size of free tokens in the nodes of a DTM (Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode) network. The defragmentation comprises defining a home node for each token at network startup in such a way that the tokens sharing the same home node will always define at least partly a continuous slot range, sending back free tokens to home nodes when a significant time has passed and, merging two or more slot-consecutive tokens with the same slot range into a single token when existing in the free pool of a node. The defragmentation can be realized in a central or a distributed token management scheme.

L'invention porte sur une méthode de défragmentation et un dispositif d'accroissement de la taille moyenne des blocs de jetons libres dans les noeuds d'un réseau à mode de transfert dynamique asynchrone (DTM = Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode). La défragmentation consiste a définir un noeud de rattachement pour chacun des jetons lors de la mise en activité du réseau de manière à ce que les jetons partageant le même noeud de rattachement constituent toujours, au moins partiellement, une plage continue de créneaux, en renvoyant les jetons libres à leurs noeuds de rattachement après un certain temps, et en fusionnant plusieurs jetons de créneaux consécutifs de la même plage de créneaux en un seul jeton s'ils se trouvent dans la réserve libre d'un noeud. La défragmentation peut se faire dans le cadre d'un système de gestion des jetons, central ou réparti.
