Abstract In sport and commercial fishing much attention is given to techniques and devices for attracting fish, whereas little effort is made to ensure that they are not repelled. The amino acid l-serine is a strong fish repellent present in the sweat of mammals, and as such contaminates fishing tackle, water, and all surfaces which may come into contact with the human skin. In this invention the amino acid l-serine is degraded through the use of periodic acid or potassium periodate, and the human scent as a repellent is reduced. A dilute solution of periodic acid or potassium periodate as an active ingredient in a cleaner is applied to the contaminated surface to break down the l-serine. The cleaner may be used when fishing, in aquariums, or in aqua- culture; whenever it is desirable not to alarm fish.
