A B S T R A C T A catalyst for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons to more unsaturated hydrocarbons comprising: (a) from 20 to 95 percent by weight of an iron oxide, measured as ferric oxide; (b) from 3 to 30 percent by weight of potassium oxide and/or potassium carbonate, measured as potassium oxide; (c) from 0.01 to 9 percent by weight of a vanadium oxide, measured as vanadium pentoxide; (d) from 0.01 to 20 percent by weight of molybdenum oxide and/or tungsten oxide, measured as the trioxide; (e) from 0.01 to 50 percent by weight of a cerium oxide, measured as cerous oxide; (f) from 0 to 50 percent by weight of a cobalt oxide, measured as cobaltous oxide; and (g) from 0 to 30 percent by weight of a chromium oxide, measured as chromic oxide.
