A method for improving the selectivity of iron oxide based dehydrogenation catalysts is presented. In one aspect of this invention the catalyst is made from an iron-containing compound having iron oxide particles which display a bimodal pore-size distribution. A process for preparing iron oxide dehydrogentation catalyst is also presented in which an iron-containing compound having iron oxide particles which display a bimodal pore-size distribution is combined with a potassium containing compound and water, this mixture is then formed into a pellet, and the pellet is calcined. The catalysts are particularly useful in the preparation of styrene from ethyl benzene.

On décrit un procédé destiné à perfectionner la sélectivité de catalyseurs de déshydrogénation à base d'oxyde de fer. Dans un aspect de cette invention, on prépare ce catalyseur à partir d'un composé contenant du fer et possédant des particules d'oxyde de fer montrant deux modes de répartition de la grosseur des pores. On décrit également un procédé de préparation du catalyseur de déshydrogénation à base d'oxyde de fer, dans lequel on combine un composé contenant du fer et possédant des particules d'oxyde de fer montrant deux modes de répartition de la grosseur des pores, avec un composé contenant du potassium ainsi qu'avec de l'eau, puis on met ce mélange sous la forme d'une pastille que l'on calcine. Ces catalyseurs sont particulièrement utiles dans la production de styrène à partir de l'éthylbenzène.
