A gas spring (10) that momentarily dwells in its retracted position after the retraction force is removed. The gas spring (10) has a casing (16), a first piston (18) received within the casing (16), a piston rod (12) protruding from the casing (16) and connected to the first piston (18), and a second piston (20) received within the casing (10). A compressible gas is received within the casing between the second piston (20) and the other end (22) of the casing (16). A hydraulic fluid is received within the casing (16) between the first (18) and second (20) pistons and between the first piston (18) and the one end (14) of the casing (16). A delay valve (26) and a check valve (24) carried by the first piston (18) controllably transfer hydraulic fluid between the two fluid chambers (64, 66), the delay valve (26) causing the first piston (18) and rod (10) to dwell in the retracted position by delaying the free transfer of fluid between chambers (64, 66).
