A delegate network appliance for streaming multimedia data between multiple clients connected to the appliance over a network, has an input for receiving multimedia data from one or clients; a plurality of functional units, each optimized for processing multimedia data streams of different media types received from one or more clients and generating multimedia data streams for transmission over the network to one or more other clients; a port for establishing a connection with a main network server and exchanging control messages therewith; and a port for sending said data streams to one or more other clients. A control unit receives the control messages over the connection from the main network server and takes over delegated responsibility for streaming requested multimedia data between the clients through the functional units to the clients in response to users' actions. 8
