Abstract An improved method and apparatus for controlling the flow of breathing gas, such as oxygen, to a person can be limited to the portion of such person's inspira- tion cycle thereby reducing the consumption of breathing gas to at least half and possibly less to extend the life of the gas supply and reduce the cost per unit time. A bidirectional dynamic mass sensor measures gas flow rate and direction yielding a corresponding proportional output voltage signal applied to a system controller indicating system failure, apnea, flaw rate and duration, consumption, and controlling gas flow duration in each breathing cycle. 13
