ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Heavy hydrocarbon oils containing sulfur and metallic contaminants are demetallized by a heat treatment, such as heat stroking, followed by thermal cracking without recycle of heavy ends. The liquid hydrocarbon products of the thermal cracking process are suitable as feed for catalytic conversion processes, such as, hydrodesuflurization, to produce a low sulfur fuel oil or synthetic crude oil.
