Abstract Disclosed is a method and apparatus for anaesthesia during dental treatment. In order to over-ride the pain-inducing negative potential aris- ing when the nerve receptors in a tooth are damaged, a constant counteracting current is caused to flow through the tooth, the direction of the current be- ing reversed at predetermined time intervals. The duration and intensity of the flow of current counteracting the pain-inducing negative potential are between 3 and 20 times as great as the duration and intensity of the current flowing in the opposite direction. The reversal of the direction of the cur- rent, and the duration of flow in each direction, are automatically controlled by electronic means. The pain relieving effect is better than if, as in prior methods, the currant is not reversed or if the time and current intensity is equal in both directions.
