Dental floss, of the type comprising a strand consisting of multiple filaments, which are made from one or more materials selected from the group consisting of cotton, silk and polymeric materials, and a coating composition which impregnates said strand and includes a water emulsionable carrier carrying one or more active agents selected from the group consisting of germicides, therapeutic agents, flavorants, sweeteners, abrasives and others, at least one sweetener being in aqueous solution. According to the invention, the water emulsionable carrier includes a waxy material selected from the group consisting of animal waxes, mineral waxes, vegetable waxes, synthetic waxes and mixtures of two or more of these waxes and an emulsifier, in order to make said coating composition homogeneous and soluble in saliva, the sweetener aqueous solution having a sufficiently low amount of water to prevent the impregnated strand from exuding when compressed.

Cette invention concerne un fil dentaire du type de ceux qui possèdent un brin se composant plusieurs filaments qui sont faits d'un ou de plusieurs matériaux choisis dans le groupe comprenant du coton, de la soie et des matériaux polymères. Ce fil dentaire comprend également une composition de revêtement dont le brin est imprégné. Cette composition contient un excipient qui peut être émulsionné dans l'eau et qui transporte un ou plusieurs agents actifs choisis dans le groupe comprenant des germicides, des agents thérapeutiques, des agents de saveur, des édulcorants, des abrasifs ou autres, l'un au moins des édulcorants se trouvant en solution aqueuse. D'après cette invention, l'excipient pouvant être émulsionné dans l'eau contient un émulsifiant ainsi qu'un agent de type cire choisi dans le groupe comprenant des cires animales, des cires minérales, des cires végétales, des cires synthétiques ou des mélanges de deux ou plus de ces cires. Ces composants permettent de produire une composition de revêtement homogène et soluble dans la salive. La solution aqueuse d'édulcorant possède une teneur en eau suffisamment basse pour éviter tout suintement du brin imprégné lorsqu'il est comprimé.
