Light emitting apparatus (10) for curing photocurable dental material includes a handpiece (12) having a housing (26), a depending handle (28) and a detachable light guide (48). The light guide (48) is received in a head (30) connected to the housing (26). Rotational movement of the head (30) relative to the housing (26) also rotatably moves the light guide (48) so that the guide (48) may be turned by the same hand of the user that is grasping the handle (28) for improved manipulation and user comfort. A base (14) of the apparatus (10) includes an upright pedestal (106) that houses a device (102) for determining the intensity of light provided by the light guide (48).
