A dental press apparatus which holds and laterally presses on a jig apparatus thereby facilitating automatic alignment of a turbine assembly. The dental press apparatus comprises: a table; an upwardly extending arm member pivoted to one end portion of the table; a press member tracked on the table; a pivoting link having one end pivoted to an intermediate portion of the arm member and the other end pivoted to one end portion of the press member to translate rotational motion of the arm to lateral movement of the press member; and, a bed adapted to hold and position the jig apparatus on the other end portion of the table adjacent to the press member. A preferred method of use is disclosed wherein a transfer pin is used to press the spindle out of the spindle assembly so that the worn bearings and used impeller are positioned temporarily on the transfer pin. Use of a transfer pin and a lateral press which automatically aligns the spindle greatly simplify the difficult task of rebuilding a dental handpiece.
