ABSTRACT A depilatory device is provided comprising a housing having a first rotary element mounted with respect to the housing for free rotational movement about an axis. A second rotary element is also mounted with respect to the housing so as to be rotatable about the axis. A drive motor mounted in the housing is coupled to the second element and is operable to rotate the second element about the axis and axially displace it with respect to the first element so that the circular end surfaces of the rotary elements move towards and away from each other. The arrangement of the end surfaces is such that hairs interposed between the surfaces are gripped thereby when the surfaces come closer together and are plucked upon continued rotation of the elements during the period of closest approach of the end surfaces.
