A novel method of depolarizing light propagating through an optical fiber or optical waveguide is disclosed. Ions (23) are implanted from outside of a cladding (22) of an optical fiber (21) to a part (27) of the optical fiber such that the ions (23) will stop in or near the core to depolarize the light propagating through the optical fiber (21). For example, a silica-based optical fiber (21) with a cladding (22) whose diameter is 125 um is irradiated with hydrogen ions (23) accelerated at 2.4 MeV. The implanted hydrogen ions (23) stop in the optical fiber core, thereby depolarizing the light propagating through the optical fiber.

Des ions (23) sont implantés de l'extérieur de la gaine (22) d'une fibre optique (21) dans une partie (27) de cette fibre de manière à ce que les ions (23) se fixent dans l'âme ou près de l'âme et à dépolariser la lumière propagée dans la fibre optique (21). Par exemple, une fibre optique (21) à base de silice, dont le diamètre de la gaine (22) est de 125 micromètres, est irradiée avec des ions hydrogènes (23) accélérés à 2,4 MeV.
