A process for depolymerizing fluoropolymers includes continuously feeding a solid fluoropolymer, in particulate form, into a horizontal cylindrical first reaction zone. The fluoropolymer particles enter the first reaction zone at one end. Within the first reaction zone, a central axle from which protrudes at least one paddle, continuously rotates. The rotating paddle serves to advance the fluoropolymer particles along the reaction zone while agitating them. As the fluoropolymer particles pass along the reaction zone, they are subjected to an elevated temperature, thereby depolymerizing the fluoropolymer into a fluoro-containing compound-rich gas phase. A residual solids phase is withdrawn at the other end of the first reaction zone, as is the gas phase. Optionally, the gas phase is passed through a second reaction zone which is also at an elevated temperature. The gas phase is quenched, thereby to recover the fluoro-containing compounds as gaseous products.
L~invention concerne un procédé de dépolymérisation de fluoropolymères comprenant l~alimentation en continu d~un fluoropolymère solide, sous forme particulaire, dans une première zone de réaction cylindrique horizontale. Les particules de fluoropolymère entrent dans la première zone de réaction à une extrémité. Au sein de cette première zone de réaction, un axe central muni d~au moins une palette est en rotation continue. La palette en rotation permet de faire avancer les particules de fluoropolymère dans la zone de réaction tout en les agitant. Au fur et à mesure de leur avancée dans la zone de réaction, les particules de fluoropolymère sont soumises à une température élevée, puis le fluoropolymère est dépolymérisé en une phase gazeuse riche en un composé contenant du fluor. Une phase solide résiduelle est éliminée à l~autre extrémité de la première zone de réaction, ainsi que la phase gazeuse. La phase gazeuse peut éventuellement passer par une seconde zone de réaction se trouvant également à une température élevée. La phase gazeuse est refroidie rapidement, permettant ainsi de récupérer les composés contenant du fluor sous forme de produits gazeux.
