ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a process for the preparation of a modified derivative of fragment B of diphtheria toxin in which fragment B which is free from denaturing agent is combined with an aliphatic mono- or di-aldehyde having a chain length of 1 to 6 carbon atoms at an aldehyde concentration of 0.035 M to 0.35 M and the mixture is allowed to stand for 5 minutes to 50 hours at 1° to 20°C. The aldehyde is removed and the modified derivative of fragment B of diphtheria toxin is recovered. The invention is also directed to this modified derivative. These products are useful in the preparation of diphtheria toxin.
