ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE NOVEL DERIVATIVES OF POLY(ISO)BUTENE This invention relates to a substituted acylating agent derivable by reacting a polymer comprising poly(iso)butene with an enophile wherein at least 50% of the undaturated linkages in the poly(iso)butene reactant terminate in a =CH2 group forming the highly reactive component (HRPIB) thereof. The number average molecular weight (Mn) of the HRPIB is at least 750 and the substitution ratio of the substituted acylating agent, which is chlorine free, is <1.3. Such agents are most useful intermediates for producing eg functionalised amino- and hydroxylated-derivatives which can be used for improving the dispersancy, detergency and VI of lubricating oils and fuels.
