ABSTRACT: Derivatized agarose products and a process for their preparation. The process of the invention can be carried out by either the steps of: A. forming a solution of a derivatized agarose in an aqueous medium or in a C2-C5 polyol containing from 1 to 15% by weight of water, B. contacting the above solution with a water- miscible solvent which is a C1-C4 alkanol or acetone, when the solution is aqueous, or cooling the solution when the solution comprises a C2-C5 polyol, to form a precipitate comprising a first derivatized agarose product, C. isolating the precipitate from the solution, and, optionally D. contacting the solution obtained in step C with an aqueous salt solution in amount sufficient to produce a precipitate comprising a second derivatized agarose product, or by the steps of: A. forming a solution of an agarose in an aqueous medium or in the C2-C5 polyol, B. contacting the above solution as in step B above to form a precipitate, C. isolating the precipitate from the solution, and D. reacting the precipitate with a derivatizing agent to produce a first derivatized agarose product, and, optionally, E. contacting the solution resulting from step C with a quantity of an aqueous salt solution in amount sufficient to produce a second precipitate, and F. reacting the precipitate with a derivatizing agent to produce a second derivatized agarose product.
