DERIVATIZED ALKYLPOLYSILANE PRECERAMIC POLYMERS Abstract Derivatized alkylpolysilanes of general formula (R2Si)(RSi)(R'Si), which are useful as preceramic polymers, are disclosed. In the formula R is independently selected from alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R' is selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals of at least six carbon atoms, phenyl radicals, and radicals of the formula AyX(3-y)Si(CH2)z- where each A is independently selected from a hydrogen atom or alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, y is an integer equal to 0 to 3, X is chlorine or bromine, and z is an integer greater than or equal to 1. There are also bonded to the silicon atoms other silicon atoms and radicals selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atoms, additional alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, vinyl radicals, allyl radicals, phenyl radicals, (CH3)3SiO-radicals, -OR''' radicals, and -N(RV) 2 radicals where R''' is an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl radical and Rv is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical, or an -SiA', radical where each A' is independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and vinyl. These derivatized alkylpolysilanes preceramic polymers can by pyrolyzed at elevated temperatures under an inert atmosphere to yield ceramic materials or articles.
