ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Allantoin is stabilized by preparation in a composition comprising an organic complexing agent and a non-formalde- hyde-donating preservative. The preservative may be selected from benzoic acid, esters of para hydroxy benzoic acid, and/or a poly halo substituted phenoxy phenol. The stabilized allantoin composition is further characterized by having an acidic pH, and preferably a pH ranging from about 4.5 to about 6.5. Dermatological compositions, including hand lotions, face creams, lipsticks, makeups and the like may be prepared which include the stabilized allantoin composition. The stabilized allantoin compositions assure uniform allantoin presence and activity in combination with improved shelf stability. A method for the preparation of dermatological composi- tions including the stabilized allantoin composition is also disclosed.
