ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel pharmaceutical composition is provided herein for mediating the physiological effects of hormones, neurotransmitters, calcium-channel antagonists or chemotactic peptides. The novel pharmaceutical composition comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of peptide hormones, neurotransmitters, calcium channel antagonists, chemotactic peptides, and their agonists, antagonists and analogues, a source of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions, and a solvent selected from the group consisting of alcohols, ketones, ethers and lipids. The compound binds to the Ca2+ and/or Mg2+_ ion and, as a result of such binding, assumes a bioactive, amphilic conformation which is different from the conformation of the compound in the solvent prior to binding. The biactive amphilic conformation is one in which the Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions are so bound to the compound as to provide a unique, 3-dimensional structure of a molecule. By the present invention, the concentration of intracellular Ca2+ is raised by means of such novel compounds. By the present invention, also, a method is provided for delivering Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ to a membrane-bound receptor by transporting Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ through a cell membrane using the above-described novel pharmaceutical compositions.
