ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A stack of gel support trays, each of said trays comprising four raised sides and a flat base having an elongate opening along one of the said sides. At least one gel can be retained on the base clear of the elongate opening with substantially no obstruction to fluid flow across the base towards the opening. The apparatus includes a system to interlock the trays in the stack to prevent lateral slippage. Each tray in the stack is guided in its stacking so that the elongate openings in all adjacent pairs of trays are at opposite sides of stack. A cover plate partially encloses the top tray in the stack leaving an elongate opening along the side opposite that of the elongate opening in the top tray. The apparatus includes a filter capable of absorbing gel grain from a destaining fluid. The fluid is guided in its flow, leaving the elongate opening of the bottom track of the tray through the filter. A tank for retaining destaining fluid and for receiving the tray stack, cover plate, filter and fluid flow guide are submerged in the fluid. an impeller circulates the fluid down through the tray stack, through the fluid flow guide and the filter and up the exterior of the stack to re-enter the stack through the elongate opening of the cover plate. The invention permits simultaneous destaining of a multitude of gels, both tube shaped and slab continuously. Maximum contact is achieved between the gel and the diffusion liquid coupled with economical use of space. - 14 -
