ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Sodium hypochlorite present in a chlorate solution from a chlorate electrolytic cell is destroyed by adding to the solution a solution compound selected from ammonia and ammonium salts such as ammonium chlorite and ammonium sul- phate. The destroying agent is added to the solution up- stream of the chlorate crystallizer in such an amount as to provide a molar ratio of hypochlorite to ammonia of less than 1.5. During reaction the pH is maintained at 6.0 to 6.5.
