ABSTRACT A meth for preparing a catalyst, suitable for the hydrodesulpburisation of hydrocarbons, comprises the step of treating the catalyst with water free from added salts in the liquid phase at ambient or elevated temperature , under reflux conditions, for a period of from 5 to 500 hours. The treatment of a desulphurisation catalyst with water changes the catalyst pore size distribution so as to improve residue desulphurisation performance.
