A removable blood seal is provided for preventing the leakage of blood during the placement and use of vascular catheters and similar devices. The structure of the blood seal includes a housing having a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end is configured such that a catheter can be removably attached to the distal end. The proximal end is configured such that a needle hub can be fit to the proximal end. The housing includes an internal channel disposed through the housing and configured such that a needle can pass through the channel. An elastomeric seal is placed securely within the channel such that it substantially blocks fluid flow through the channel. The seal is preferably configured of an elastomeric material such that if a needle penetrates said seal and is then later removed, said seal substantially closes the internal channel to fluid flow.

Le joint comporte un logement avec une extrémité proximale et une extrémité distale. La configuration de cette dernière permet de fixer de façon amovible un cathéter à l'extrémité distale. L'extrémité proximale est configurée de façon à pouvoir y adapter un embout d'aiguille. Le logement est traversé par un canal interne, dans lequel peut passer une aiguille. Un joint élastomère est fixé solidement à l'intérieur du canal, de façon à empêcher pratiquement tout écoulement de liquide dans ce canal. Le joint est de préférence constitué d'un élastomère; si une aiguille est introduite dans le joint et est ensuite retirée, le joint ferme pratiquement le canal interne à tout écoulement de liquide.
