A brake assembly for mounting on the axle of at least the last wheel in an in-line skate. The assembly has a housing and mounting means on the housing for use in mounting the housing on the axle. A brake member is movably mounted in the housing for movement between an operative position contacting the last wheel on the skate to brake the skate and an inoperative position spaced from the wheel. Brake moving means are provided within the housing for moving the brake and actuator means operate the moving means.
