An apparatus for and method of monitoring the operation of a stepper motor used to control the main burner valve of a gas appliance. The gas appliance has a pilot burner. A thermopile thermally coupled to said pilot burner produces an electrical output which powers the stepper motor and a control microprocessor. The control microprocessor monitors the waveforms of potential induced by rotational motion into the unenergized stator coils of the stepper motor. By analyzing the waveforms, the microprocessor can monitor the start time, stop time, and direction of the rotational motion.

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé permettant de surveiller le fonctionnement d'un moteur pas-à-pas utilisé pour commander la soupape d'un brûleur principal d'un appareil à gaz. L'appareil à gaz comprend une veilleuse. Une pile thermoélectrique couplée thermiquement à ladite veilleuse produit un courant électrique qui alimente le moteur pas-à-pas et un microprocesseur de commande. Ce microprocesseur de commande analyse les signaux de tension induits par le mouvement de rotation dans les enroulements statoriques non alimentés du moteur pas-à-pas. En analysant les signaux, le microprocesseur peut commander la mise en marche, l'arrêt et le sens du mouvement de rotation du moteur.
