Doppler ultrasound may be used to detect stenosis in a blood vessel using a variety of approaches. In one approach, the flow envelope is extracted from the Doppler ultrasound measurements, and the extracted flow envelope is parameterized. Classification is then done based on those parameters (and optionally other parameters), to determine whether a stenosis exists. A second approach uses Doppler data that is acquired in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of blood flow, and detects artifacts that are consistent with turbulences that usually ap-pear downstream from stenoses.

Selon l'invention, on peut utiliser un Doppler à ultrasons pour détecter une sténose dans un vaisseau sanguin à l'aide d'une diversité d'approches. Selon une approche, on extrait l'enveloppe d'écoulement des mesures par Doppler à ultrasons, et on paramétrise l'enveloppe d'écoulement extraite. On réalise ensuite une classification sur la base de ces paramètres (et facultativement d'autres paramètres), afin de déterminer si une sténose existe. Une seconde approche utilise des données Doppler acquises dans une direction perpendiculaire à la direction de flux de sang, et détecte des artéfacts qui sont cohérents avec les turbulences apparaissant habituellement en aval des sténoses.
