Immobilized macromolecules such as proteins or nucleic acid sequences are tagged with labels which induce a chemiluminescent reaction in a liquid-phase substrate. As the reaction is occurring, the substrate is exposed to a phosphor screen which absorbs the chemiluminescent emission in an image of the pattern formed by the macromolecules. The absorbed energy is then released and read, providing qualitative and optionally quantitative information regarding the immobilized macromolecules.
