ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A detection device detects ends of a tape in a tape cassette. The tape cassette comprises a first reel having a first reel hub and adapted to bear thereon in wound stats an opaque tape connected at one end thereof to one end of a transparent first leader fixed at the other end thereof to said first reel hub, a second reel having a second reel hub and adapted to bear thereon in wound state said tape connected at the other end thereof to one end of a transparent second leader fixed at the other end thereof to said second reel hub, and a cassette case accommodating said first and second reels and having first and second windows in at least one side wall thereof. The detection device comprises at least one light- emitting element and first and second light-receiving elements respectively disposed on extensions of lines respectively joining said light-emitting element and said first and second windows, said first light-receiving element detecting the tape end on the first reel side in response to reception of light passing through said first leader and said first window when said first leader reaches a position where it cuts across the light path joining said light-emitting element and said first light-receiving element, said second light-receiving element detecting the tape end on the second reel side in response to reception of light passing through said second leader and said second window when said second leader reaches a position where it cuts across the light path joining said light-emitting element and said second light-receiving element.
