A detection device (10) is adapted to be attached to the distal end of an endotracheal tube (12) for proper intubation of the endotracheal tube in the airway of the patient. The detection device has a housing (70) with a sliding plunger (140) positioned within the housing. The plunger has a finger loop (152), and the housing has a gripping member (120) at the proximal end of the housing for verifying the proper intubation of the endotracheal tube.
