ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An elongate object such as a wire rope is electromagnetically tested for cross sectional area variations by axially magnetizing two adjacent sections of the object in opposing directions. Variations in the axial flux which are caused by cross sectional area variations are measured by using saddle coils which are positioned adjacent the magnetized sections of the object and which detect variations in the radial flux from the object.
